A Charlottesville girl showed off her smarts Wednesday night on Jeopardy, and walked away with the top prize.

Eleven-year-old Joli Millner, who attends Burley Middle School, says she was very excited about being on the game show. She beat out the competition to take home the win and $15,000. She says the best part about her appearance on Teen Week was the trip to Los Angeles.

Millner invited one of her favorite poets, Maya Angelou to a big viewing party Wednesday. While Angelou was not able make it, she did send Millner two autographed books.

New Principal Appointed for Stone Robinson Elementary School

The Albemarle County School Board appointed Dr. Nicholas J. King as the principal of Stone-Robinson Elementary School at its meeting Thursday night.

Dr. King earned his Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Virginia, and he also holds a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from North Carolina Central University. He has served as Chief Academic Officer for Northampton County Schools in Jackson, NC for two years, and has five years experience as a high school principal and four years experience as an elementary principal.

Dr. King replaces Ashby Kindler, who was named Principal of Murray High School, also overseeing the Community Public Charter School and the Enterprise Center, earlier this month.

We are offering an expanded summer schedule to help meet the needs of our students. Lessons are available Monday through Saturday. We offer morning/early afternoon and evening lessons to help beat the heat. Trail rides are available to GEC students who would like to take a break from ring work and experience the extensive trail system.

Lesson rates are still just $35 / lesson and we offer 30 minute private, 45min semiprivate, and hour+ group lessons. 

If you have visitors this summer that are interested in riding please try to call at least one week in advance to schedule a lesson. We would like to accommodate everyone but we often fill our lesson slots. Advance notice will best ensure a spot that works for you.

Adults! There has been a lot of interest in starting an adult riding group.  This group will meet several times a week but we need your input to create a schedule that fits your lifestyle. This option will be open to beginners and riders returning to the sport and will be a fun way to socialize, ride, exercise, and relax- all from the backs of our wonderful horses!

GEC is offering lease options for those of you who would like to experience the joy of owning your own horse for a fraction of the expense.  Please contact us for more information as lease options can be tailored to your needs.

We still have several stalls available for boarding! If you currently board your horse at another facility and you drive by our barn on a daily basis I strongly encourage you to contact me to see if I can help shorten your commute! Our boarders enjoy the extra time they save to spend a few more minutes out on the trails, relax in our air conditioned lounge or enjoy a morning cup of coffee on our patio. This is a community barn and we embrace all skills and disciplines of riding.

Expect a gentle rise in mortgage rates

Worries about the European debt crisis have investors flocking to relatively safe investments like mortgage-backed securities that are backed by the government, helping keep mortgage rates low.

But economists with the Mortgage Bankers Association still think rates on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages are likely to rise into the high 6 percent range by the end of 2012, albeit on a more gradual slope than previously projected.

In a June 11 forecast, MBA economists predict rates on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages will gradually rise to 5.4 percent during the fourth quarter of this year, reaching 6 percent in the last three months of 2011 and averaging 6.6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012.

The Alzheimer’s Association Central and Western Virginia Chapter and the University of Virginia Health System invites you to a special screening and discussion of HBO’s The Alzheimer’s Project as part of a national discussion to encourage individuals to learn more about the disease and the research being done, as well as to gain a greater understanding of the issues surrounding it.

The screening program on Thursday, June 24 at the Glenmore Country Club begins with wine and brain healthy hors d’oeuvres at 6:00 p.m. A special abbreviated screening from the HBO documentary series will begin at 7:00 p.m. followed by a discussion panel featuring Dr. Steven T. DeKosky, Vice President and Dean of the University of Virginia School of Medicine and one of the world’s leading Alzheimer’s researchers; Dr. David Geldmacher (Glenmore Resident), Medical Director of the UVA Memory Disorders Clinic and Carol Manning, PhD, Director of the UVA Memory Disorders Clinic.

The Alzheimer’s Project is HBO’s 4-part, multi-platform series that brings new understanding and hope for millions and reveals human faces behind the disease.
